Introduction

The Student Conference was organized by the Livestock Development Studies Group (LDSG), a formal study group of the Development Studies Association (DSA). The LDSG, is committed to a multidisciplinary approach to development. Indeed, the themes of this year’s student conference Poverty and Marginalisation: Asset vulnerability Among the Poor, which was held on the 22nd of May 2006, at the Madejski Theatre, Agricultural Building, The University of Reading,attracted many disciplines. Presentations ranged from anthropology, agricultural extension, biological science, business, economics, law, linguistics, marketing, and meteorology. Participants came from many institutions such as, Cambridge University, Edinburgh University, University College London, University of East Anglia, NRI University of Greenwich, IDS University of Sussex, and The University of Reading.

The LDSG would like to thank the Development Studies Association for their support and funding for this conference. The DSA works to connect and promote the development research community.

The LDSG would also like to thank the keynote speaker, Dr Anni McLeod, F.A.O. Senior Officer from the Animal Production and Health Division, for opening the conference. Dr McLeod gave us a fascinating talk on avian influenza.

Furthermore, the LDSG would like to thank the sponsors of the prizes awarded. A prize of £100 was awarded to the best presentation, sponsored by the Ørskov Foundation. In addition, a prize of £100 was awarded to the best presentation on stakeholder engagement sponsored by the Wellcome Trust.

The LDSG would like to thank Bob Ørskov from the The Ørskov Foundation and Anil Patil from the Wellcome Trust for coming to present the prizes and support the students in their academic development.

The LDSG also thanks Dr Rachel Fretwell, Widening Participation, University of Reading, for her informing talk on Public Engagement and funding.
